Open enrollment comes around every year, and it is the best moment to make sure your plan still works for you. Many Houston households simply let coverage renew without looking, then discover higher costs or a missing doctor in January. This checklist helps you avoid that.
When is open enrollment?
Dates depend on the type of coverage. For ACA Marketplace plans, open enrollment has typically begun in early November and run into January, but dates can vary, so confirm the current schedule on HealthCare.gov or with an agent. For Medicare, the Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 to December 7. Employer plans set their own windows, often in the fall. Miss your window and you may have to wait unless you qualify for a special enrollment period.
The 5-point open enrollment checklist
1. Confirm your doctors and hospitals are still in network
Networks change from year to year. Look up your primary care doctor, specialists and preferred hospital in the plan's directory, and call the office to verify if you can.
2. Check your prescriptions
Formularies can change, with drugs moving to a higher tier or being dropped. Search each medication by name and note the tier and any restrictions like prior authorization.
3. Compare total cost, not just premium
Add up your likely yearly premium, deductible and copays or coinsurance. Remember the out-of-pocket maximum as your worst case. Our guide to comparing health insurance plans shows how.
4. Update your income and household information
If you buy on the Marketplace, your premium tax credit depends on your estimated income and household size. Big changes such as a new job, marriage, a new baby or a move can affect what you qualify for, so report them accurately.
5. Read your renewal notice and look for plan changes
Carriers send notices explaining changes in premiums, benefits and networks. Do not toss it. A plan can change significantly between years, and a better option may now exist.
Life events that open a special enrollment period
Outside open enrollment, certain events can give you a special enrollment period, often about 60 days. Examples include losing other coverage, getting married or divorced, having or adopting a child, and moving to a new coverage area. If one of these applies to you, act quickly.
Do not forget the add-ons
Open enrollment is a good time to review dental and vision coverage, critical illness insurance and accident insurance, and to ask whether your life insurance is still enough after any changes at home or work.
Common open enrollment mistakes
- Letting coverage auto-renew without reading the changes.
- Choosing only by the lowest monthly premium.
- Forgetting to update income, address or household size.
- Waiting until the last day, when plans and agents are busiest.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change plans after open enrollment ends?
Generally only if you qualify for a special enrollment period. Employer plans have their own rules.
Should I switch plans every year?
Not necessarily. But reviewing every year helps you catch cost and network changes. Staying put can be the right choice if the plan still fits.
